What is biopharmaceutical?

Pharmaceutical biotechnology (biopharmaceutical) is a new field, inheriting and developing the achievements of biotechnology in the production of drugs and related products for healthcare and beauty. From the early stages of biotechnology, humans knew how to use plants and some other living organisms as medicines to cure diseases. Decoding human genome sequence (2001) and big data technology marks a new research area on treatment directions based on genome analysis.

Pharmaceutical biotechnology has become an important tool in pharmaceutical research and development. Statistics showed that 15% of drug sales belong to biotechnology. Biopharmaceutical technology also participates in different stages in the subclinical examination, typically tumor-related diseases, metabolic disorders, joint system disorders, and infectious diseases.

A typical example of the strong development trend of biopharmaceutical technology in the future is the research and testing process of a vaccine SARS-CoV-2.  After the appearance of the COVID19 virus, many types of vaccines are developed with biotechnology (AstraZeneca, Sputnik V), mRNA vaccine technology (Pfizer and Moderna). In this situation, Vietnam is also developing four vaccines using biotechnology are recombinant DNA technology (Nanocovax) and viral vectors (Covivax, Polyvac, and Vabiotech). Investing in biopharmaceuticals is vital in developing new products, new processes, methods, and services. Therefore, on April 21, 2017, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 553/QD-TTG approving the master plan to develop the bio-industry up to 2030, stating: “Biotechnology in the field of medicine, focusing on the production of vaccines; medicine; biological drugs, antibiotics, antibodies, biological products; diagnostic kits; functional foods; equipment for the production of biological products in the field of medicine”.

Research directions and applications of Biopharmaceutical Technology

Studying "Biopharmaceutical" at Vietnam Academy of Agriculture

To promote and apply Biotechnology to meet the development of the pharmaceutical industry in Vietnam, from the academic year 2021-2022, the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture officially opens the training course "Biopharmaceutical". With a team of permanent lecturers and visiting lecturers of the Department of Biotechnology in the Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical Technology program, who are well-trained from developed countries such as Korea, Japan, Australia, Germany, USA, ... Teaching activities combining scientific research activities will support lecturers to transfer knowledge from theory to practice. In addition, the faculty's support staff is very professional, responsible, and enthusiastic to ensure the most favorable conditions for teaching, learning, scientific research, and personal skills.

Becoming a student of biopharmaceutical-VNUA, learners have the opportunity to learn, experience, and combine scientific research to consolidate and enhance basic and specialized knowledge blocks to achieve prescribed output standards. Learners will practice and experiment at modern laboratory systems, experimental camps, demonstration areas, research model areas in biotechnology and biopharmaceutical. Students can practice in the production, management, and trading units of pharmaceutical products. During the studying and research process at the Academy, learners are fostered foreign languages, informatics, have the opportunity to participate in social activities, clubs, teams, and groups to develop 10 core skills. Core for international integration and skill training for employees in the period of 2020 - 2025 mentioned from the World Economic Forum include Complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, human management, effective teamwork, emotional intelligence, judgment and decision making, customer service, negotiation, cognitive flexibility.
